[ISP] High Speed Crash Claims Life Of Modoc Man

Start Date:  5/15/2012 Start Time:  12:00 AM
End Date:  5/15/2012 End Time:  11:59 PM

Entry Description

Wayne County – Last night shortly after 10:25 p.m. Pendleton units responded to report of a serious crash on Thornburg Road in northwest Wayne County.  Troopers Nick Razor and Eric Freeman arrived to find a Mini Cooper on its side crashed into a house.

The preliminary investigation revealed the car was southbound at a high rate of speed on Thornburg Road, about a ½ mile south of Randolph County Line Road, when it went airborne over a rise in the road.  When the car came down the driver lost control and the car ran off the right side of the road striking a large rock.

After striking the rock the car was launched through the air approximately 81 feet striking a tree before coming to rest on its side against a home at 11292 Thornburg Road.  The driver, who was not wearing a safety belt, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

Killed was Ryan M. King, age 23, of Modoc.  No one in the home was injured. Troopers at the scene were assisted by the Wayne and Randolph County Sheriff’s Departments, Economy Volunteer Fire Department and other Wayne County EMS units.

According to the fatal crash statistics for April, most fatal crashes in Indiana occur between 2p.m. and 10 p.m. with the leading causes of fatal crashes being running off the road on the right, followed by failure to yield, then unsafe speed. Remember, wearing safety belts can reduce the risk of injury in a crash by fifty percent.

[ISP] Crash Investigation Interrupted by Secondary Crash

Start Date:  5/14/2012 Start Time:  12:00 AM
End Date:  5/14/2012

Entry Description

Hammond, Lake County-Indiana State Police responded to a crash on I-80 east bound at Calumet Avenue, early this morning, that resulted in another crash.

At approximately 2:23 a.m., Trooper Marcus Gholson responded to a crash at the above location where a green 1999 Dodge pick-up, driven by Nathaniel Dross, 34 of Griffith, was entering I-80 east bound from north bound Calumet Avenue ramp when he hit a semi.  The semi, a black 2012 Freightliner pulling a box trailer, was driven by Paul Salowitz, 55 of Flint Michigan, had pulled off I-80 onto the outer shoulder for a few seconds when the Freightliner was hit by the pick-up.  Dross was wearing his seat belt and his air bag deployed.  Dross was taken to Munster Community Hospital with facial injuries.  Alcohol was a factor. Dross was taken to Lake County Jail and cited for Operating While Intoxicated and Unsafe Lane Movement.

During his investigation of the crash, Trooper Gholsonwas blocked the far right lane with all his emergency lights activated.  At approximately 3:15 a.m., Salowitz was speaking with Gholson standing outside the passenger window of Gholson’s police car when a green 1999 Chevrolet Express van, driven by Peter Humphries, 44 of Gary, who was in the far right lane swerved to the right to avoid Gholson’s police car.  Salowitz was able to jump away from the police car as Humphries van hit Gholson’s car knocking the side view mirror off and putting a dent in the passenger side door.  The van ran Salowitz’ foot over as he jumped away and then struck the rear bumper of Salowitz’ semi trailer still parked on the outer shoulder.

Salowitz was not injured.

Humphries was air lifted from the scene and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois with lower extremity injuries.

All lanes of I-80 east bound where closed off and on for reconstruction of the crash, removal of the injured and removal of the vehicles.  Traffic continued in the far left lane.  All lanes reopened at 7:15 a.m.

[ISP] Initial Hearing Set In Identity Deception Case
Start Date:  5/14/2012 Start Time:  12:00 AM
End Date:  5/14/2012

Entry Description

Lafayette- On February 13, 2012 the Indiana State Police at the Lafayette Post received information of a possible identity deception case involving a suspect form the Lafayette area and a serviceman with the United States Air Force.

Sergeant Bryan Harper of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Indiana State Police spoke with the victim Billy Garcia.  Garcia stated that he owed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) back taxes for employment at Perdue Farms to which he never was employed.  Sergeant Harper’s investigation has revealed that Leonel Guijosa Silva, 26 years old from Lafayette, IN was using Mr. Garcia’s identifying information for employment at Perdue Farms.

Mr. Silva was charged with Identity Deception a Class D Felony and is scheduled for an initial hearing this morning in Superior Court 6 at the Tippecanoe County Court House in Lafayette, IN.  This is an ongoing investigation.

Sergeant Bryan Harper advised that this is the third such case involving the IRS and people owing back taxes.  Victim’s information is used by suspects who may be here illegally and obtain victim’s information to get employment here in Indiana and other states.  The suspect works at the job until they are fired, get other employment or move out of the area.

Tips for employers to keep from hiring persons using false information are to check the application.  Do some background investigation!  Check to be sure information provided by the applicant is correct.  A little checking can go a long way in stopping identity deception.

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Catfish Spawning Months

Indiana Fishing & Hunting

Catfish Typical Spawning

Months

Example Locations:
Months:
Florida: April-Early June
Alabama/Georgia : May-June
Texas/Oklahoma : May-June
Kentucky/Tennesee : June-July
Missouri/Illinois/Iowa : June-July
Ohio : June-Early August
Minnesota/Wisconsin : June-Early August
Manitoba : July-August

Dividing the U.S. up into 3 sections we can approximate how the seasonal calendar affects each range.

Northern Range:  The winter season typically runs from mid-November to mid-April. The transition to the cold water season may run from mid-April to mid-May. Prespawn can start in mid-May and last until mid-Sept. This is also the time frame for spawn, postspawn, presummer and summer peak. Post summer normally begins in mid-Sept. and lasts until mid-Oct. Cold water season begins again in mid-Oct. and lasts until it rolls over into winter again in mid-November.
Southern Range: Winter season normally begins around the second week of Dec. and runs until first of Feb. Cold water season can run from the first of Feb. until the middle of March. Prespawn can run from mid-March until mid-Oct. This also covers spawn, postspawn, presummer and summer peak. Mid-Oct. to mid-Nov. will see the next cold water period until it again rolls over into winter again around the first to second week of Dec.

Mid Range: Winter season normally begins at the first of December and runs until the middle of Feburary. Cold water season will last from mid-feb. to the beginning or first week of April. Prespawn can run from the beginning of April to the first of Oct. This also covers spawn, postspawn, presummer and summer peak. Postsummer may begin in Oct. and last until Nov. Nov. usually starts the cold water period and rolls over into winter again in Dec.

As you notice in each region, spawn, postspawn, summer, and summer peak and lumped withing prespawn. The reason for this is that, as noted before, not all species, or even the same species of catfish spawn at the same time. This leaves a fairly large window to look at for the prespawn. The good news is that since cats dont all spawn at the same time, even during the spawn the opportunity for trophy catfishing is still very present.
Also note that this information is based on approxomate time frames and are not always accurtate. Changes in weather patterns from one region to the next can move one phase up or back by weeks at a time. Monitor the water temperatures around your local fishing spots for the most accurate predictions of each calender period.

Cat fishing in Reservoirs

Indiana Fishing & Hunting

Bait Fishing - How to Catch Catfish in

Reservoirs - Details Here!
By Mark Fleagle

Catfish in reservoirs is not a natural occurrence. Although bait fishing for catfish in reservoirs is booming today because of original stocking and migrations of native river catfish into the reservoirs. Reservoir building during the 1950's, and 1960's and still today, has opened up a vast water areas for catfisherman. The original habitat of channel catfish, blue catfish, flathead catfish, and white catfish have always been in the river systems of the United States and they still thrive there today.

Reservoirs are water impoundments that get their water supply from rivers that have been dammed. These new water impoundments vary in shape, size, depth, water color, productivity, and potentially many other characteristics. The catfish populations as well as other species come from the migration of the species from tributary feeds, you can bait fish for catfish such as channel catfish, flathead catfish, and blue catfish in some reservoirs, but just about all the reservoirs in the USA hold very good populations of channel cats.

To catch catfish in reservoirs takes some practice because natural habitat and structure is abundant in reservoirs. To catch catfish you need to understand the reservoir you intend to fish. It important you get your self a Topographical maps of the reservoir. They can normally be obtained from The army core of engineers. Many times local bait shops also have maps. Also paying attention to the catfishes food chain is important. For example reservoirs almost always hold large populations of shad. If you can find the shad schools you will locate some species of catfish close by. Normally flathead catfish don't follow the shad schools. One key indicator there are shad near is multiple birds flying around. This a good way to locate shad schools for bait fishing for catfish. If you are looking for trophy catfish then reservoirs are where you need to fish. Most species of catfish can grow extremely large in reservoirs. Catching a blue catfish over 30lbs is not uncommon.

Another key factor to catch catfish in reservoirs in understanding where the original series of channels were located. Catfish will remain a river fish instinctively even in reservoirs even in reservoirs. There will be good populations of channel catfish, flathead catfish, and blue catfish living in structure that is close to the original creek and river channels.

To catch flatheads locate areas near the original river channel or original creek channels. Flathead catfish are not a roaming catfish like the blue catfish. If you intend to go bait fishing for flathead catfish you will need to find there location. These fish will not move far.

To catch blues in reservoirs head to areas that have current flow, and to where the shad schools are located. Blue cats do not hold as tight to the original channels as do flathead catfish, but the will still be located in these areas. If you are going bait fishing for blues you can use live catfish bait or dead cut bait, the blues like either. Their favorite food sources are oily schooling fish such as threadfin shad, gizzard shad, and skipjack herring. If you can locate the shad schools in reservoirs you could have a outstanding day of fishing.

To catch channel cats in reservoirs you can fish anywhere in the reservoir where there is adequate catfish habitat. If there is a better spot for channel catfish on a reservoir it would be far up small tributaries adjacent to the main reservoir. They are like the blue cats and they will feed on live baits such as shad and crayfish, mussels or cut bait. If you plan to bait fish for channel catfish through line just outside the current in structure areas channel catfish are like flathead catfish and do not prefer to stay in current.

Well that concludes my article about bait fishing for cats! We wish you the best of luck on your next fishing trip! Have a nice day.

Bait Fishing - Classifying Catfish Lakes Details Here!
By Mark Fleagle

When we talk about classifying catfish lakes we basically talking about locating different species of catfish such as channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish at different times of the year. The classifying process is not an exact science because there is not a lot of scientific data that has been collected about catfish like other game fish species. Fortunately there is some data that has be collected about the channel catfish, and we will use some of that history as reference for our article today. Our article today will focus on the different types of catfish lakes.

To classify catfish waters is a three part process. When you classify catfish waters for bait fishing you compare the type of lake, structure, the lakes location, and seasonal movements of a particular species of catfish such as channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish. If this sounds like a bit of work it is. To be a very good catfish angler it does take a bit of practice and trial and error just like any other sport. For example your best pro athletes spend hours in the weight room and with conditioning to get ready for the next season. The ones that prepare the best perform the best, it's no different with fishing for catfish, or any other fish species for that mater.

Before we start on the different lake classifications lets talk briefly about the idea water temperatures for channel catfish, blue catfish and flat head catfish. This information is vital when you are preparing to identify ideal bait fishing for catfish waters. The ideal temperature range for all catfish is between 75degrees to 80 degrees. When the water temperature rises to 75degree all catfish will start their spawning. This will occurs at different times, depending where the catfish waters are located. Typical spawning periods for Florida are the months, of April, May and June. The catfish spawning times for Alabama and Georgia are May and June. In Texas and Oklahoma catfish spawn between May and June. In Kentucky and Tennessee the spawn will happen between June and July. In Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa The spawn of catfish will occur in June and July. In Ohio The cats will spawn over a three month period between July to early August. In Minnesota and Wisconsin you can expect the spawn to be between July to early August also. Manitoba Canada will have a spawn of catfish between July and August.

The following information about the types of catfish lakes is to be used as a guide only so you can classify your local cat fish hole and lakes around you. There are no two lakes that are exactly alike but fortunately lakes do fall into three basic categories which are oligotrophic (young lakes), mesotrophic (middle aged lakes), and eutrophic (old lakes). Some lakes such as oligotrophic lakes will not hold any catfish and can be eliminated them from you catfish lake classification list. Understanding the idea temperature range for catfish is a key factor when you start to learn the catfish water classification for bait fishing. All baseline data will be developed based on knowing this information first. Catfish will react differently when the water temperature moves below or above their ideal temperature and you will be predicting their movements and feeding patterns based on this information.

To classify a lake into one of the three lake classifications listed in the last paragraph there are some specific factors you need to consider such as how many game fish there are compared to the number of bait fish, the amount and type of aquatic vegetation, and other critical structure habitat factors. This information will be used in combination of seasonal movements to determine where catfish will be located and what type of catfish bait to use when you go bait fishing for your particular species of catfish.

Well that concludes my article today about classifying catfish waters. May you have the best of luck on your next fishing trip! Have a great day!
